Date: Tuesday 4 August 2025

Duration: 4 hours, 12.30 – 16.30, (including breaks and Q&A)

Format: delivered virtually via Zoom

The Equality Act 2010 protects pupils from many forms of discrimination, including disability discrimination. This training session for school and education staff provides an overview of the Equality Act and explains how pupils with disabilities in schools are protected from discrimination.

This training is designed to help school staff and those responsible for school governance understand the legislation and how it applies to their work with pupils with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) in their school. Statistically, children and young people with SEND are much more likely to be subject to exclusions, behaviour sanctions and/or issues with attendance at school compared to their classmates. Against this backdrop, we’ll explain what schools need to do to prevent and address inequalities and ensure they do not discriminate against pupils with a disability.

Delivered by a member of our legal team, the training will cover the following topics and include practical exercises and discussion to reinforce learning:

  • The Equality Act 2010: the legal framework and definitions
  • The different types of disability discrimination
  • Implications for exclusion, behaviour and attendance policies and practice
  • Reasonable adjustments
  • Interaction with Children & Families Act 2014
  • Redress under the Equality Act 2010

By the end of the training, you will have a sound understanding of the Equality Act, recognise how to protect pupils with disabilities from discrimination and feel confident when making decisions that you are applying the law correctly.

Who should attend?

  • SENCos
  • SEND professionals, including local authority staff
  • Schools

Please note, this training is not relevant for staff in the following education settings: further education, early years settings and non-school settings. The training has relevance for independent schools, but the attendance, behaviour and exclusions guidance we will consider only applies to maintained schools, academies and pupil referral units.
