Date: Monday 28 September 2026

Duration: 6 hours (09:30 - 15:30, including breaks and Q&A)

Format: delivered virtually via Zoom

We often hear from SENCos who are finding it difficult to fulfil their role effectively. This can be due to a lack of resources or support from within the school, or the frustration of securing EHC needs assessments and appropriately funded EHC plans.

Our one day training, designed specifically for SENCos, provides an overview of the special educational needs and disability (SEND) legal framework, and will equip you with the knowledge required to overcome the challenges of your role. Please note, some of the content of this training is less relevant for SENCos in colleges and wholly independent schools.

Delivered by a member of IPSEA's legal team, the training day covers the following topics:

  • The SEN legal framework
  • Statutory duties on schools
  • Statutory duties on local authorities
  • Education Health and Care (EHC) needs assessments
  • EHC plans
  • Naming a school or college in an EHC plan
  • Annual reviews

By the end of the training, attendees will have a sound understanding of the framework of SEND law and will be better able to secure the special educational provision that their pupils require and the funding to go with it.

This training is not suitable for parents and carers (please see our upcoming dates for parent/carer training here).

  • SEND law online - level 3: this is an advanced level e-learning course with a particular emphasis on gaining knowledge regarding bringing different types of appeal to the SEND Tribunal.
