We have a number of training days available covering a variety of topics - click on the options below to expand further information about each of our training days, and to enquire about making a booking.

Introduction to SEND Law (parent group, school or charity)

Our one day training is designed specifically for parents, carers and supporting family members, providing an introduction to the law on special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), and empowering you to secure the right education for your child.

Delivered by a member of IPSEA's expert legal team, the training explains what your local authority and education setting should be doing to help, the process of obtaining an Education Health and Care (EHC) plan for your child, and also looks at what an EHC plan should contain. 

The content is particularly relevant for parents and carers who are looking to secure additional support at school and/or an EHC plan for their child, but would also be suitable for those who already have a plan in place and would like to learn more about the law and how it applies to children and young people.

Level 1: SEND Law Training (parent group, school or charity)

Our Level 1 SEND law training provides an introduction to the law on special educational needs and disabilities (SEND). The content is particularly relevant for professionals advising or supporting families of children and young people with SEND, but may also be suitable for parent groups who have attended previous IPSEA training and wish to extend their knowledge.

Delivered by a member of IPSEA's legal team, the training covers the following topics: 

  • The Children and Families Act 2014
  • The duties of local authorities and schools
  • Education, Health and Care (EHC) needs assessments
  • EHC plans – including naming a school and changing a plan
  • An introduction to the Equality Act 2010
  • Exclusions 

By the end of the training, attendees will have a sound understanding of the framework of SEND law and how children and young people with SEND should be supported. They should also be able to begin using that knowledge to identify how the law can be applied to support parents, carers and young people with SEND. 

The training day is also designed to complement our Level 1 online learning which covers the topics in further detail.

Level 2: SEND Law Training (parent group, school or charity)

Our Level 2 SEND law training looks more in depth at specific areas of the law relating to children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities. The content is particularly relevant for professionals advising or supporting families of children and young people with SEND, but may also be suitable for parent groups who have completed our Level 1 training and wish to extend their knowledge further.

Delivered by a member of IPSEA's legal team, the training day covers the following topics: 

  • Inclusion
  • The duty to specify in an Education, Health and Care (EHC) plan
  • Annual reviews
  • Home to school transport
  • Mental capacity
  • Health and social care
  • Mediation 

By the end of the training, we would expect attendees to be able to identify cases where more complex support is required, and to be able to begin supporting parents, carers and young people in such situations. 

Whilst this face-to-face course is suitable as a stand-alone course, it is designed to complement our Level 2 online learning which covers the topics in further detail. We would expect a participant to complete this online training in addition to the face to face course in order to be able to confidently advise and support families of children and young people with SEND.

Level 3: SEND Law Training (parent group, school or charity)

Our Level 3 SEND law training is an advanced level training day designed for professionals advising or supporting families of children and young people with SEND. The content builds on the topics covered in our Level 1 and Level 2 training, with particular emphasis on gaining knowledge to support parents and young people to bring different types of appeal to the SEND Tribunal.

  • SEND Tribunal procedure
  • Contents appeals
  • What could go into section I of an Education, Health and Care (EHC) plan – and how to ensure that you get it there
  • Challenging decisions – choosing your method carefully 

Whilst this face-to-face course is suitable as a stand-alone course, it is designed to complement our Level 3 online learning which covers the topics in further detail. We would expect a participant to complete this online training in addition to the face to face course in order to be able to confidently advise and support families of children and young people with SEND.

SEND Tribunal Training (parent group, school or charity)

Our one day SEND Tribunal training is designed for those advising or representing parents, and covers the essentials of preparing and presenting a case at the First Tier Tribunal (SEND Tribunal). The content assumes some prior knowledge of SEND law, so we anticipate that attendees will have already completed other IPSEA training.

Delivered by a member of IPSEA's legal team, the training day covers the following topics: 

  • The SEND Tribunal and the timeline of a case
  • Successful advocacy in Tribunal cases
  • The rights of appeal 

By the end of the training, we would expect attendees to be equipped with the knowledge of law, practice and procedure necessary to conduct hearings in the SEND Tribunal.

SEND Tribunal Hints and Tips (parent group, school or charity)

Aimed at parents and carers of children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), these two half-day training courses are suitable for those currently going through the appeals processes detailed below.

  • Understanding the steps and stages of the appeal process and what to do at each stage

  • Evidence, case law, preparing submissions and analysing and responding to any local authority response to the appeal
  • Preparing effectively for your appeal hearing day

EHC Plan Masterclass 1 - Obtaining a plan (parent group, school or charity)

Aimed at parents and carers of children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), this one-day training has been developed to guide you through the process to obtaining an EHC Plan.

Our one-day training is designed specifically for parents, carers and supporting family members who wish to build on their learning from our ‘Introduction to SEND Law’ training day, or who already have a basic understanding of the special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) legal framework.

Delivered by a member of IPSEA's legal team, the training covers various areas of the law which ensure that children and young people with SEND are supported and protected in accessing education, including:

  • Maintaining and reviewing an Education, Health and Care (EHC) plan
  • Ceasing to maintain an EHC Plan
  • Making a complaint or challenging a decision
  • Transport to school or college
  • Exclusion

The training is particularly relevant for parents and carers whose children have identified special educational needs (SEN) and who:

  1. have an EHC plan already in place or are in the process of applying for an EHC plan; or
  2. are supported through SEN support and interested in learning more about the law regarding transport and exclusions
