This one day training for parent carer forums is specifically tailored to help parents become more informed about SEND law, whilst also building in elements of parent participation to ensure the training also meets the requirements of your DfE parent carer participation grant.

Prior to the training, we ask you to complete a pre-training exercise with the parent carers that will be attending to gather their thoughts on the main issues facing children and young people with SEND and their families in your specific area. Our trainer will review the findings of the pre-training exercise in order to tailor the training session to the needs of the families in your area.

The training will be tailored to the main issues identified through the pre-training exercise, and it will also cover:

  • The legislative framework for supporting children and young people with SEND
  • The legal duties of local authorities and schools/colleges and other settings
  • EHC needs assessments and reassessments
  • The content of EHC plans, including naming a placement and amending a plan
  • Annual reviews
  • Appealing to the SEND Tribunal
  • An introduction to the Equality Act 2010, including the duty to make reasonable adjustments
  • The law on exclusions

Following the training, we will work with you to develop a tailored feedback questionnaire for attendees, from which you can collate information that emerges from the training on the key legal issues facing families in your area. You can use this to prepare a report to share with the local authority and health partners to inform future parent participation and co-production relating to areas of concern locally.

This training relates to the law as it applies in England, and is suitable for a maximum of 25 participants in order to allow sufficient opportunity for questions.

Duration: 5.5 hours (10.00 - 15.30, including breaks and Q&A)
