This course is designed for staff in special schools and colleges, and is suitable for those who deal with initial enquiries from the parents/carers of prospective pupils, and/or young people themselves, who want to know how to get a place in your school or college.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the training, you will:

  • Have a basic understanding of the special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) law framework
  • Better understand the questions you need to ask when prospective pupils or their parents/carers contact you
  • Be able to provide general information and advice to parents, carers and young people about the next steps they need to take
  • Be able to signpost parents, carers and young people to sources of further support


Using a scenario-based model, the course will cover:

  • How to respond to parents, carers and young people who contact you to find out how to secure a place at your school or college, including the questions you need to ask

An introduction to the relevant parts of the SEND law framework, including:

  • The process for obtaining an EHC needs assessment
  • Rights of appeal to the SEND Tribunal
  • The process for requesting that a specific school or college is named in an EHC plan
  • The process for getting the placement named in an EHC plan changed
  • The duty on local authorities to consult with prospective placements
  • The purpose of annual reviews
  • What your school or college can do to assist the parent, carer or young person concerned
  • Others sources of advice and support for parents, carers and young people who require more detailed tailored advice
