Barnet backs down |
Good news!In March 2003, IPSEA warned Barnet parents to challenge their LEA immediately if their child's statement had been tampered with so as to remove specification of the help their child needed. Barnet had written to all parents of children with statements to tell them they were going to remove specification, an act IPSEA and many others believed to be unlawful and potentially very detrimental to children's educational chances. If individual parents complained, Barnet backed down, but that left the least aware and possibly most needy parents in most danger. IPSEA is glad to say that today Barnet has announced that it will no longer pursue this policy, and will restore the specification of provision to statements they had amended. Parents will be written to informing them that the amended Statements will have specification of provision reinstated. Of course, parents will have an opportunity to appeal if they believe more provision is necessary or want a change of school, etc. |
